Researchers are now proving what consumers have known for many years: that individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) and similar disabilities are not only capable of participating in physical activity, but that incorporating active living into daily life leads to better mental and physical health. The focus on active living at SCI Alberta has been fairly recent but has grew tremendously over the past two years with the introduction of the Adapted Adventures program in Edmonton and the launch of the SCI Alberta Fitness and Wellness Centre in Calgary. Research is showing that early involvement in adapted physical activity optimizes recovery and leads to better overall health. In collaboration with the Paralympic Sports Association, the Adapted Adventures Program is now being managed by their program staff. Spinal Cord Injury Fitness and Wellness Centre - Calgary
"Since I started working out at the fitness and wellness centre my life has changed in so many ways. I’ve become more independent. I’ve gotten my confidence back. I’ve been able to take one full dosage of my pain medication. I fall asleep in two minutes and when it’s dinner time or lunch time, I’m actually hungry."
